Denny Hamlin on Fox and Friends

Denny Hamlin was a visitor on Fox News' morning show Fox and Friends this morning. He was there promoting his special March of Dimes March for Babies paint scheme that he will be running at Phoenix on April 18th.

Denny and the Denny Hamlin Foundation are big supporters of the March of Dimes and his team sponsor, Fed Ex, has been a supporter for over a decade. It is a great cause and if you can't march yourself, support someone who is able to participate.

Missed the show? Want to see Denny's segment? Check out the video at the top of the page. It's a fabulous spot and Denny looks great as always!

Note that the interviewer calls him Dennis repeatedly. Too cute.

Nationwide Success in Phoenix for Hamlin

Denny Hamlin showed up in Phoenix prepared to climb behind the wheel of the No. 18 DLP Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing. Because the team has run a limited schedule, it fell into the go-or-go-home category of qualifying. Hamlin had to make the show on speed or he wasn't guaranteed a starting spot for the Hefty Odor Block 200. Strange for a team that has won so many races in the Nationwide Series but true none the less.

Never doubt the horsepower of a JGR Toyota or it's incumbent veteran Denny Hamlin. He is a flat course ace and he showed his true talents when he laid down the fastest lap and started from the Pole for that afternoon's race. A modest Hamlin displayed minimal excitement about his stellar qualifying performance and instead wanted teammate Joey Logano to be the shining star for the Gibbs' stable and capture the Manufacturer's title for his owners. Isn't that just like Denny Hamlin to direct the spotlight on someone else. A gesture that is honorable and well acknowledged but there are moments to be proud of and Hamlin deserved his own props.

Hamlin looked poised to dominate the field after leading the first 24 laps of the 201 lap event in the land of the rising sun. After Hamlin’s first stint at the front of the 43-car field, the driver of the No. 18 DLP HDTV Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing relinquished the lead for only three laps to pit for tires and fuel before reasserting his presence at the top spot.

Hamlin led the next 38 circuits around the 1-mile oval before making his second scheduled pit stop on lap 66 during a caution period. It was there where Hamlin’s race-winning effort drifted off course, for there was a miscue in the pits that forced him back down pit road one lap later.

A miscommunication between the crew and the crew chief saw scuffs put on the front of the car while stickers were put on the back of the car. Due to a cut tire in practice, the 18 team was already short a set in an already limited number of tires in the Nationwide series and conservation was a definite must. The problem saw Hamlin come back down pit road to change rear tires and put him back in 25th position.

The ordeal dropped Hamlin all the way to 25th when the race restarted on lap 71. While a win seemed improbable, a strong finish did not. Hamlin rallied his way into the top-10 by lap 114 and cracked the top-five on lap 134.

Running in fourth when the race’s final caution flag waved on lap 194, Hamlin pitted for four tires and fuel, while those ahead of him – Carl Edwards, Kevin Harvick and Hamlin’s Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Joey Logano – stayed out. Also staying out was rookie Landon Cassill, who took over the fourth spot when the race restarted on lap 199. For the two-lap shootout to the finish, Hamlin slotted in at fifth, and suddenly, with four fresh tires compared to the race-worn slicks of those in front of him, a win appeared within reach.

Hamlin picked off Cassill and Logano on lap 199, and jettisoned Harvick for second on lap 200 while still needing less than a lap to take the win from Edwards. But time was not on Hamlin’s side. As he drove off turn four and chased down Edwards, the checkered flag waved, with Edwards able to stay ahead of the hard-charging Hamlin.

“We were beside him at the finish,” said Hamlin, who now four top-five finishes in eight career Nationwide Series starts at Phoenix. “I was pretty confident. You have to pass every car smooth after the restart. You have to have every opening and everything. We had an opportunity and came up short. It was still a great run by this DLP team. I’m glad to be in this car.”

With the second-place finish, the No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing entry, which has won 10 times already this season, moved up one spot to 22nd in the series’ owner standings with 3,347 points.

Quite an impressive run for Denny Hamlin and his No. 18 DLP Toyota. At some point I hope that the incumbent leader of the JGR stables realizes that he is a talented driver with abilities that even he hasn't realized yet. Humility is an admirable quality but self-defeating statements are of no benefit to anyone, especially Hamlin.

JJ Yeley throws out first pitch at Arizona Diamondbacks Game

When Arizona Diamondbacks owner Jeff Moorad joined a group that bought controlling interest of Hall of Fame Racing's owners Troy Aikman and Roger Staubach, no one would have ever guessed that it would lead to JJ Yeley driving his No. 96 DLP Texas Instruments Toyata out onto the field from right field and throwing out the first pitch at the Diamondbacks Wednesday night game against the LA Dodgers. Yeley, who joined the 96 team after leaving Joe Gibbs Racing and the No. 18 Interstate Batteries ride, was quite impressive on the mound.
JJ also featured a Diamondbacks’ “10th Anniversary” logo along his wheel wells. Drivers from at least eight different NASCAR teams will also attend the games throughout the weekend as honorary guests of the Diamondback organization.
Quite an honor for JJ Yeley, who is back home in Phoenix. Guess it pays to have a boss who also owns a Major League Baseball team. The Diamondbacks defeated the Dodgers 4-3. Looks like JJ brought them good luck. Too bad they didn't do the same for him. JJ had rough night after getting caught up in an on-track incident with Reed Sorenson, Matt Kenseth and Dave Blaney, Yeley finished 39th, 88 laps down.

Phoenix has this fan HOT!

  • The Subway Fresh Fit 500 had me fired up and it started from the very beginning. This may take a while, but I'm sure I will feel better when I'm done.
  • FOX decided that baseball was more important than the Pre Race Show and Opening Ceremonies. For the record, I'm not a baseball fan and when they say NASCAR is going to be on at 8pm then they need to have it on at 8pm. If they were able to switch baseball to FX for the last 30 seconds, then they could have switched it earlier. I got my fill of the Boston Red Sox during the World Series. Show me some athletes that don't use steroids.
  • Where were the caution flags? NASCAR waited until a huge pile-up ensued before throwing the yellow for Ryan Newman's power steering box blow out. Did ya not see that huge plume of smoke pouring out of his car? That was fire! It was too late by time the caution did actually come out. 5 good cars got damaged because of the fluid that Newman was putting down. That lead to a red flag to clean up the mess that was made by the 12 car. Unavoidable, yes. But it hurt the cars in the garage trying to repair their damage.
  • NASCAR didn't learn it's lesson from the Newman fiasco. Elliott Sadler's motor blew up and he slowed to a near crawl, barely being missed by Dave Blaney (where in the world was his spotter? Vacation?...wake up people!) and sending cars scrambling to get around him. When a car's that slow, something's seriously wrong and it's time to slow down the field.
  • What was Ryan Newman thinking in the pits after he brought out the caution? That was just unsafe and unnecessary. If he had spun out like that with other cars on the pit road, I hate to think how that would have turned out. Did that really help anything?
  • Conserve fuel was the catch phrase of the day. Apparently Jimmie Johnson knew just how to do that. Congrats to him for gambling and getting a huge pay out. He ran out of fuel while doing his Polish Victory Lap. If only there had been overtime...maybe that pit stop the 11 made for tires and fuel would have come into play. You can't help but think of what might have been.
  • Finally! Hendrick Motorsports won a race and they can stop whining. Dale Earnhardt Jr. has had an incredible season and hasn't whined a single time about coming up short. He gets disappointed but knows that with some hard work, the right scenario and driving his heart out he'll make it to Victory Lane. Looks like his elder teammates could learn a lesson from the sport's most popular driver. He didn't get that way for being a cry baby...hmmm. Imagine that! Maybe that's why the crowd goes wild for him and boos when his Dupont flaming teammate is around. I just might have something there.
  • Denny Hamlin had one heck of a race. Denny had his third consecutive top 5 finish and his fifth top 10. That's nothing to complain about. He gained one position in the points and now sits a solid 6th. Can't complain about that. And that car sure looked good on the track. I was so proud to see that Denny was supporting the March of Dimes and it's March for Babies. Being a new Aunt, I can certainly appreciate that.
So, after the dust settled in the desert, it was quite an interesting turn of events. Elliott Sadler had an amazing run going but had it all go up in smoke when the engine blew. The only good thing about that is he was home before everyone else. Johnny Sauter did a bang up job replacing Jeremy Mayfield in the Haas Automation # 70. Gee, do you think that helped anything? I don't. Jeremy could have been a scoring pilan. Okay, I've said what I needed to say. All in all, I was pretty disappointed with NASCAR's performance at Phoenix. There needs to be some examination of things during this off week. Exactly when does the caution flag need to wave? After 10 cars pile up in turn 3? Maybe 25 is better. Do we really need the whole field on the track at the end? And next time you want to show baseball instead of NASCAR...just remember who's in front of a Congressional committee and who brings in the most fans.

Who will win the Subway Fresh Fit 500 in Phoenix

In an effort to get everyone involved, I've decided to pick a race winner, tell you why I think so, a dark horse for the win, someone who just might surprise you and take the checkered flag and a driver who has no chance to win. But the no chance driver must actually be in the field. So give me your thoughts, tell me who you think will take the trophy and prove me wrong. No matter who I may pick, I will always want D Ham to win, but in reality he can't win 'em all...unfortunately.

Winner: Kyle Busch
Why: Ky Bu's been on quite a roll lately and last night's Nationwide Series win is just the beginning for the young rock star.
Dark Horse: Matt Kenseth
No Chance: Jeff Gordon

Special March for Babies Paint Scheme for the # 11 at Phoenix

Denny Hamlin, FedEx Kinko's and the March of Dimes will race a very special FedEx Kinko's/March of Dimes #11 Toyota Camry in the Subway Fresh Fit 500 this weekend at Phoenix International Raceway. The car focuses attention on the March of Dimes and the annual March for Babies walk - an organization and event FedEx has long supported at both the local and national level. As part of the car unveiling event, Hamlin was presented with a specially designed helmet by five year-old Dallas native Tiffany Bell-Nunez. Bell-Nunez was born eleven weeks premature and weighed only 2 lbs 13 oz. and much of the care that led to a successful recovery for Tiffany was aided by research funded by March of Dimes. Tiffany is now a very healthy five year-old and her mother Vicki, a FedEx Kinko's employee, remains an active advocate for March for Dimes. In an additional show of support, FedEx has set up a special portal on fedexracing.com for those interested in supporting the charity and FedEx Racing in the upcoming March for Babies.
Denny’s fans and all NASCAR fans have the opportunity to join him and the FedEx Racing Team in helping babies be born healthy by visiting
marchforbabies.org, or fedexracing.com. You can also go to any FedEx Kinko’s for more information about March for Babies, which takes place nationwide this month.
The March of Dimes is the leading nonprofit organization for pregnancy and baby health. With chapters nationwide and its premier event, March for Babies, the March of Dimes works to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality.
