After hearing the news that Rick and Linda Hendrick had survived a scary crash landing, it got me to thinking. I worry about Denny when he's racing, I cry when he crashes and I pray the entire race to ask for safety for someone I truly care about. He has a dangerous occupation and the risks he takes are frightening.
Losing Dan Wheldon really hit home. It reminded me that at any moment Denny could be taken from this earth and I would be devastated. You never know when what seems so safe could become something that costs a precious life. I have nightmares and lose sleep worrying over what could happen during 500 miles of racing, especially at Talladega and Daytona.
But on track isn't the only place that I have to worry, the Hendrick incident makes that even more apparent. With the busy schedule NASCAR drivers maintain, it is impossible not to fly back and forth to keep up the lifestyle they are subject to. That racks up air miles and increases the chances of accidents. While they are a fact of life, they're still scary and make you appreciate the people you love and care about. Every day is a gift, every moment a blessing and every chance to say I love you should be taken full advantage of.
So I make no apologies for caring, worrying, crying or praying. Asking to know that someone who has changed my life is home safe and sound isn't asking too much. It's just a way of showing that friendship means something, letting your heart show in the little things you do is never something you should be ashamed of. You never know when the last time you say I love you, good night and talk to you soon could be your last goodbye. Thankfully, that isn't coming any time too soon.
