Sheridan Ridge opening it's doors to NASCAR's finest

A place to relax, racing style
Racing's best announce plans for VA resort
We are used to seeing them together on the track. But Thursday in Smyth County, Virginia, some of NASCAR’s finest focused on the place they hope to eventually kick back.
The Sheridan Ridge Private Reserve covers more than 1,400 tree filled acres just outside the town of Chilhowie. From the air, it is clear this land has gone untouched, until now.
Driver Tony Stewart says he can’t wait to have a house in the development.
“This was a perfect opportunity,” he said. “It’s not racing themed, but it’s got a lot of racing influence.”
Stewart, along with his crew chief Greg Zippadelli, racing commentator Jeff Hammond, and drivers Elliot Sadler and Denny Hamlin, are part of Sheridan Ridge’s Advisory Board. They get a say in what ends up in the community, and they will all have places there.
Without a lot of downtime, Elliot Sadler, is excited about the prospect.
“I just hope to have a getaway and have a place to come… a log cabin that on off weekends I can come up here and relax,” he said.
Sheridan Ridge developers plan a 56 acre village center, and 500 home sites ranging from three acres and up. The drivers say the resort style development is even more attractive to them because of location. There are four NASCAR tracks within close proximity -- Bristol Motor Speedway, Richmond International Raceway, Martinsville Speedway and Lowe’s Motor Speedway.
With a small airport nearby, Tony Stewart says, “You can get here so quickly without killing your whole evening flying to get home. So with the location of it, it is perfect for us to be able to cover a lot of tracks and be able to get home and have a nice dinner before you get home.”
Stewart thinks others in the racing family will join this elite group, and also invest here. He and the other drivers expect to see a few fans buy in as well as construction begins.
Who do the drivers want as their neighbor? Elliot Sadler answered this question with a joke.
“As long as it’s not Tony,” he joked. “Tony is pretty vocal all the time. And all the people get mad at him and start throwing stuff at his house and they’ll accidentally hit mine.”
Work at Sheridan Ridge will begin later this year. Developers say there could also be a conference center, boutique hotel and amphitheatre for concerts before all the phases are complete.
